Little Dog can never have enough treat jars! After all, he has his biscuit treats for when I have to leave the house, his teeth cleaning treats, and his ‘Mommy needs to bribe you to do something’ treats. He’s 13-years-old and lets now fool ourselves, I am bribing him now not training him! I do love that Little Dog. He is my inspiration for this project. So off we go to create Puppy Treat Jars.
The best suggestion I’ve heard for getting pots is Goodwill. Unfortunately, they had nothing when I went. Planning to go to the flea market this weekend and see what they have any. Maybe I can strike up a good deal for a bunch. I really prefer to upcycle items rather than buying new. On the way home, I stopped at Walmart to see if they had Thompson water seal which they did and grabbed a can of that. Figured, what the heck, I will check on terra cotta pots while here. Pots are not really that expensive. Got the pot itself for $1.24 and the saucer for $1.20. Grabbed both and off home I went. Still heading to the flea market.
Have never used water sealer and that is strange stuff. As it is an aerosol spray, the back porch was the best area to do this. Put the overhead fan on and proceeded. Tux the Terrible was watching me like a hawk…scary kitty. The spray is very oily and very smelly like a petroleum product. Not sure what I expected but not that. Was very glad I opted for the back porch and fan. Presently, I am waiting for it to dry thoroughly before I attempt to paint it.
For paint, I shall be using white exterior latex paint. To change the color, acrylic craft paints will do the trick. Using the water sealer and exterior paint will protect the terra cotta from absorbing water, which it loves to do, and cause the painted layers to slough off. It won’t be dishwasher safe but safe enough to wash gently in warm soapy water. Do not soak though. Not to forget that terra cotta is very absorbent and will suck up paint like a sponge. With the sealer you will alleviate a lot of that. I am sure you feel as I do, that after putting in all the time and effort to produce a fantastic piece, one wants to protect it at all costs.
Still looking for the head of puppy. Might come up with something this weekend at the flea market. Way back when, they used to use round globes for flower arrangements. Maybe even a fish bowl. I shall keep everyone posted on what I come up with and show you the finished project.
Another project on the burner is this guy … He will be painted black and tan just like my Little Dog and I have just the right google eyes to put on him.
I found a companion for these dear little pups. That would be just too fun having a couple little Doxies and a fire hydrant by your entry way!
There are many ways to put all these pots together and come up with whatever breed you have. Try it! There was even a sheep with curly wool on it so anything goes. I might not put these guys out in the direct hot sun and pounding rain of SE Georgia but for sure I foresee my back porch housing them. Oh kitty will be so happy to share …LOL.
I will return with the outcome of the puppy treat jar.

― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Don’t wast another minute with anger. Create things to make yourself laugh. Get a Doxie! After all what is funnier than having to pet your Doxie while I type. Touch me, Touch me, Touch me.
